Metamorphic Political Campaign Card, "A Buchan-eer Before/After the Presidential Election," 1856

This novelty from the 1856 Presidential campaign depicts a "Buchan-eer" praising the Democratic candidate, James Buchanan. This mechanical, metamorphic card created during the election depicts a happy Democrat supporter "before" the election. However, if you pull the paper tab, the Buchan-eer's expression changes "after" the election, presuming Buchanan lost. The joke, however, was on Buchanan's opponents. Buchanan won.
